Research Report Title: Impact of Continuous Assessment on Students' Performance in Physics in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education Examinations. By Dr. Saverio Pido, HOD Research & Data.
There is a general feeling that the current assessment sytem may be a factor contributing to the high failure rate in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.  A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group research was, therefore, conducted to examine the impact of continuous assessment(CA) on student performance in Physics in UACE examinations as an alternative or additional form of assessment. Three groups of students were formed. Sixty-four participants in the experimental Group 1 were given treatment in the form of CA tests prepared by the researcher, seventy-nine participants in the experimental Group 2 were given CA tests prepared by the classroom teachers for the two year A-level course. The control group received the normal teaching without administration of CA tests.  At the end of the two years, both the experimental groups and the results show that both experimental groups performed significantly better in the UACE examinations than the control group.  However, there was no significant difference in performance between the two experimental groups. CA has enhanced the performance of students in the experiment group in the UACE examinations. The study recommend that Physics teachers should adopt CA during the teaching and learning process to help improve learning and performance in examinations.
