: : UNEB launches Online Registration

UNEB has announced a shift from manual to digital registration of candidates beginning this academic year 2014.
UNEB has announced a shift from manual to digital registration of candidates beginning this academic year 2014.  The e-registration of candidates, according to UNEB Secretary, Mr. Matthew Bukenya, is aimed at speeding up the registration exercise, reduce the teacher traffic to the examination body's offices. "The benefits of this e-registration are immense.  They include quick and efficient registration of candidates, cost-saving, elimination of errors in entry and quick confirmation of their registration status through SMS."

The new system also allows candidates to register offline and later send their data when they access to Internet.  The schools upcountry that lack computers and Internet access will share computers with those schools that have the facilities.  A student can register on disk and go to an internet access centre and send his/her registration data to UNEB.

A pilot study was done in 237 schools across the country especially in hard -to- reach areas and it was successful.  The new online system will allow candidates to register from a location without internet connectivity and send from another with internet services.

An examination centre will be required to have a trained person to handle e-registration, a photographer, internet connections or removable disks like a DVD, CD or flash disk.

Government schools have been urged to take lead in the e-registration bacause the ministry partnered with the Uganda Communications Commission and provided computers in schools.

UNEB has embraced ICT with candidates now able to access exam results instantly through text messages on mobile phones.
